PS WAGUNDA WITNESSES KENYA ELECTRICITY TRANSMISSION PPP PROJECT AGREEMENT SIGNING BETWEEN KETRACO AND AFRICA 50

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Public Investments and Assets Management, Mr. Cyrell Odede Wagunda today joined colleague Principal Secretaries in witnessing the signing of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Public Private Partnership (PPP) Project Agreement.

The Agreement between Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) and Africa50 consists the construction of two transmission corridors at a cost of 311 million US Dollars within 30 months.

The project shall be implemented in phases, the first being the 400kV Lessos-Loosuk line traversing Samburu, Baringo, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet with substations at Lessos and Loosuk. The second phase is the 220kV Kibos-Kakamega-Musaga line serving Kisumu, Vihiga and Kakamega counties.

The Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury in his speech read on his behalf by The National Treasury and Economic Planning Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo noted that the investment facilitates the integration of 300MW of geothermal power from Baringo-Paka-Salali, enhances evacuation of renewable energy and strengthens system reliability across the North Rift and Western Regions.

"Reliable electricity strengthens national development, enhances learning environments, supports uninterrupted health services, improves business productivity and expands agricultural output through irrigation, processing, mechanisation and storage," read the CS's speech.

The project is worth 311 USD and is estimated to be completed in 30 months.

Also present were Principal Secretaries Dr. Bonface Makokha (Economic Planning) and Alex Wachira (Energy),  Public Private Partnerships Kenya Director General, Eng. Kefa Seda, top leadership from KETRACO and Africa 50 and a number of stakeholders .
